I observed the Indonesian Language class, which is an elective course, allowing students the freedom to choose whether or not to take this class. The lesson takes place during Period 7, which is the last period of the school day. Despite being held at the end of the day, students remained enthusiastic and engaged in the various activities designed by the teacher.

In this lesson, students learn about various topics in Indonesian, including weather, colors, and conversations related to purchasing an item. This material aims to enrich students’ vocabulary and help them understand and use the Indonesian language in daily life contexts.

Indonesian Language – Grade 1

In the Grade 1 Indonesian Language class, students are introduced to weather and seasons in Indonesian. They learn the names of the four seasons and how to say them in Indonesian:

  • Winter → Musim Dingin

  • Spring → Musim Semi

  • Summer → Musim Panas

  • Autumn/Fall → Musim Gugur

In addition to weather, students also explore vocabulary related to tastes and flavors in Indonesian. They learn how to describe different flavors such as:

  • Spicy → Pedas

  • Sweet → Manis

  • Salty → Asin

  • Bitter → Pahit

  • Sour → Asam

To reinforce this topic, students participate in an interactive categorization activity, where they match foods with the correct taste. For example:

  • Salt (Garam) → Salty (Asin)

  • Sugar (Gula) → Sweet (Manis)

  • Lemon (Lemon) → Sour (Asam)

  • Coffee (Kopi) → Bitter (Pahit)

  • Chili (Cabai) → Spicy (Pedas)

After learning these concepts, students complete a handout with questions related to seasons and flavors. The handout contains exercises that require them to identify and categorize different foods based on their taste, as well as answer basic questions about seasons in Indonesian.

Indonesian Language – Grade 2

In the Grade 2 Indonesian Language class, students focus on two main topics:

  1. Colors (Warna)

  2. How to Buy or Order Something (Cara Membeli atau Memesan Sesuatu)

Students begin the lesson by learning the names of various colors in Indonesian, such as:

  • Red → Merah

  • Blue → Biru

  • Green → Hijau

  • Yellow → Kuning

  • Black → Hitam

  • White → Putih

  • Brown → Cokelat

  • Gray → Abu-abu

  • Orange → Oranye

  • Pink → Merah Muda

They then move on to learning basic conversations related to purchasing or ordering something in Indonesian. Students are taught essential phrases, such as:

  • "How much does this cost?" → "Berapa harga ini?"

  • "I would like to buy this." → "Saya ingin membeli ini."

To practice, students engage in a role-playing activity, where they simulate conversations between a buyer and a seller. They take turns playing both roles, practicing how to ask for prices, request colors, and place orders in a real-life context. Finally, students complete a handout related to the lesson. The handout contains exercises.

Throughout the session, students actively worked on the handout provided by the teacher, which serves as a structured guide to help them comprehend and reflect on the lesson. In addition to working individually, the lesson also emphasizes peer discussions, allowing students to exchange ideas, compare perspectives, and collaborate to gain a deeper understanding of the material.

Conclusion

Both Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes incorporate a hands-on, interactive approach to learning Indonesian. By combining vocabulary lessons, practical exercises, role-playing, and handouts, students are able to develop their language skills in a way that is both engaging and meaningful. Despite being held during the last period of the day, students remain actively involved, making the learning process enjoyable and effective.
